International Trade Club - Brilliant Breakfast

Our prestigious breakfast meetings provide vital, informative presentations from guest
speakers specifically designed for our Importers and Exporters to develop their knowledge
of key issues and to share their experiences with fellow members.

Eliza Ward from the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), a membership organisation with over 90 members from large retailers such as John Lewis, most major UK supermarkets and brands such as Boden, Next, Jack Wills and many more. Eliza spoke about how businesses are using ETI tools to respond to the growing pressure for business to demonstrate responsible behaviour including the Modern Slavery Act.


John Pickervance is an Associate at Forbes Solicitors, specialising in Commercial Law both on a national and international basis. John regularly advises businesses of all sizes on international trade and with focus on contractual issues such as Agents and Distributors. Different laws and practices need to be considered when trading overseas and John covered some of the main points to note and pitfalls to be aware of.


Despite the looming issues of Brexit, the UK continues to have a thriving business culture and recognises the need for short term business trips in the UK. Jacqueline Woodland an Immigration Consultant with over 18 years’ experience in direct corporate/business immigration provided vital information on how you can ensure your company is fully compliant – the do’s and don’ts, what documents are required, the length of stay and the cost; and most importantly are you using the Business Visa route correctly?

The Chamber of Commerce are continuing to keep our importers and exporters up to date with the UK’s exit from the EU, senior policy adviser, Antonia Jeans and her colleague Mahek Mehta from The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) provided a focussed presentation on ‘New Approach goods and the UK marking’ (in the event of no deal) – the presentation covered: the Continuity Approach; UKCA marking; Notified Bodies; Importer Obligations; Nominated Persons; Non harmonised goods.

Helen Cowley, Tax Partner, Baldwins Group, will provide an update on International Tax and accountancy packages.

Joanne Gardner, Agri-Food Chain Directorate, DEFRA is responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, supporting the UK’s world-leading food and farming industry. DEFRA play a major role in people's day-to-day life, from the food we eat, the air we breathe, to the water we drink, and will become increasingly more important.
