Business Opportunities in Algeria and North Africa

Article Date: 03 February 2011

Algeria is part of the Maghreb (Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia) and this region is growing fast. Algeria, Libya and Tunisia are major exporters of oil and gas, and Morocco and Mauritania, although having little or no oil and gas, export significant volumes of agricultural products and minerals. The Maghreb countries are experiencing high demand for raw materials from emerging economies such as Brazil, China and India, and strong demand, at high prices, for oil and gas from emerging economies and Europe.  Demand for Maghreb exports is likely to remain buoyant therefore there is good prospects for continuing high growth in these countries.  Algeria and the Maghreb countries are using the wealth obtained from the high demand for their natural resources to modernise and develop their economies. This leads to opportunities for UK firms to develop new export markets in this part of the world.

Alistair Burt the Ministry for Middle East and Africa has highlighted the success of British firms in Algeria.   These successes include major defence related contracts - “Augusta Westland has recently won orders to supply helicopters to the armed forces.” and in service industries - “These include Linguaphone and Language Solution teaching English in Algeria for seven years and has expanded its business to teach English to aircraft personnel.” Mr Burt concludes that “There are many opportunities for UK businesses to support the development of the Algerian economy in sectors as varied as oil & gas, agriculture, construction, education & skills, environment, healthcare and ICT. “
