EU-China Business Training Scheme

Article Date: 07 May 2009

One manager from the United Kingdom has secured a place for the fourth round of the EU-China Managers Exchange and Training Programme (METP). A Sino-European jury selected an overall number of 48 managers from 19 EU member states to obtain training as China experts. Interest in this competitive 10-month programme that offers in-depth language training and practical experience in China surged for METP 4, with the number of applications almost trebling in comparison to the last phase. Andy Blackburn is looking forward to joining the programme: “I work as an IT consultant and trainer in the banking sector, and am very happy that I convinced the jury with my business plan. I applied for METP not only to learn Chinese, but to obtain first-hand knowledge on the Chinese way of doing business. Staying in China for 10 months is the best way to gather in-depth insights and to become an expert for the Chinese market.”

The EU-financed ten month programme offers EU-based companies and especially SMEs the possibility to train their employees to become qualified experts for the Chinese market. Ideally, these experts will utilise their newly acquired skills and contacts needed to conduct business with China.

Long-term objective of METP is to enhance and to sustainably improve the EU’s relationship with China through exchange and economic cooperation. Stefan Hell, Team Leader in Beijing: “To be successful in China, one needs a profound knowledge of the language, economy, culture and business ethics. And this is what METP offers applicants. At the same time, the programme functions as a platform where Europeans and Chinese meet and build long-term relationships – the basic foundation for successful business in China. The high number of applicants for METP 4 indicates that, despite the financial and economic crisis, European companies and managers retain a high interest in building up trade relations with China.”

Besides the organisation of the whole stay, the EU will cover all tuition fees. METP will provide participants with a monthly living allowance (about 1.000 Euros). All graduates receive an official diploma signed by the EU Ambassador to China.

METP is a four-year initiative of the European Commission and the Chinese Government and is divided into four intakes, each lasting ten months. Intake 4 is scheduled to start in May 2009.
